Amber & Copal

Amber & Copal is a lapidary material valued for decorative and jewelry applications. It is relevant to jewelry, cabochon, faceting, carving and lapidary work. For HANS, the machining focus is cutting, shaping, grinding and polishing, with tooling selected around the material’s hardness, brittleness, geometry and required surface condition.

Machining Challenges

The material can be relatively soft, porous, heat-sensitive or prone to edge bruising; aggressive pressure can cause scratches, chipping or local overheating.

Recommended Diamond Tool Solutions

Use thin diamond saws and fine resin/flexible diamond abrasives with light pressure and progressive grit steps. Keep cutting cool and use gentle final polishing appropriate to the specific gem.
