Sapphire

Sapphire is a optical or photonic crystal used in laser, infrared, electro-optic or frequency-conversion components. It is relevant to laser, photonic, electro-optic and infrared optical components. For HANS, the machining focus is precision cutting, grinding, lapping and optical polishing, with tooling selected around the material’s hardness, brittleness, geometry and required surface condition.

Machining Challenges

Crystal orientation, brittle edges, scratching, cleavage and subsurface damage must be tightly controlled to achieve optical-grade geometry and surfaces.

Recommended Diamond Tool Solutions

Use low-runout diamond wire/saw cutting, fine edge grinding and carefully controlled lapping/polishing. Use low force near edges and process fluids compatible with the specific crystal chemistry.
